A Rio De Janeiro Travel Guide

Where to stay:

1.	Caesar Park Hotel – One of Rio de Janeiro’s most luxurious and expensive hotels, the Caesar Park boasts a fabulous location on the famous stretch of the Ipanema beach. All the hotel’s rooms are spacious and look great after a very recent renovation. They are equipped with bathtubs, a suit rack, and a well-lit workspace. The standard rooms are those from the 5th to 10th floor, looking out over the side street. The superior rooms also face the side but are located from the 11th floor up. The exquisite deluxe rooms provide a full ocean view which is breathtaking.

2.	Excelsior Copacabana Hotel – A member of the famous Windsor Hotels chain, the very pleasant Excelsior is situated on a wide corner which offers excellent and unique ocean views. Rooms either have a side view superior) or a full ocean view. All of the hotel rooms are quite nicely furnished, spotless, and well maintained. The best rooms are the deluxe suites of course which take up the entire corner and offer both side and full ocean views. These suites also equipped with spacious bathrooms, a relaxing Jacuzzi tub, a flat screen TV and a comfortable king-size bed. The hotel also offers free local calls, free parking and an excellent breakfast buffet, what more could a visitor want?

3.	Casa 6 – A small and clean hostel with quite a few private rooms, with shared or private cozy baths. It is on a very charming street with other hostels and boarding houses, and an easy walk to the beach, making it a perfect solution. The simple rooms get a lot of natural light and are very well maintained by the employees, and the owner has a wealth of information about the surrounding neighborhood. Although it is a quite pleasant spot, it is the location that draws most travelers here.

Where to eat:

1. Confeitaria Col
1000
ombo – This establishment is the ultimate example of Rio’s sophisticated cafe culture reminiscent of Paris or Vienna. The huge and elegant space opens up to a canopy of stained glass that washes filtered light onto huge mirrors. Their dark, carved frames are of the same ornate style as the opulent wood-and-glass cabinets towering above the counters.

2.	Doce Delicia – This colorful and modern restaurant is located in Leblon (with another branch at Rua Anibal de Mendonca 55, which is in Ipanema) and serves dishes like salmon in soy and ginger sauce, design-your-own salads (with ingredients like palm hearts and papaya) and quite tempting desserts like a chocolate mousse cake which is as delicious as it sounds.

3.	Espirito Santa – This restaurant was opened recently in 2005, by the famous chef Natacha Fink which uses little-used indigenous ingredients like jambu root and graviola fruit to create a new and rather unique kind of Brazilian cooking. Some of the dishes include a filet of namorado (some sort of white fish), baked in a Brazil-nut crust and served over grilled fresh hearts of palm.

What to do:

1.	Corcovado – Here you can spot the very famous Sugarloaf Mountain, the island-pocked Guanabara Bay and the breathtaking beaches outlining the coast like links of white sausages. Even better than this, you can make fun of the inevitable sightseer aping the statue’s outstretched arms for a photo. “Turistas chatos” means “annoying tourists” in Portuguese, should that phrase come to mind when in the near vicinity of that area.

2.	Blue Man – This store sells sungas which is the Brazilian version of the famous American Speedo. Its bathing suits tend to be on the more provocative side and the stores’ other offerings make it easier to show it all off. Bill Clinton and Anthony Hopkins made headlines when they bought bikinis there back in 2001, although it was not clear for whom they purchased them.

3.	Tumbao do Malevo – This open-air bar is situated under a tree canopy. It is not uncommon to see its patrons, still sandy from the beach, sampling fresh fruit caipirinhas while a group of musicians played mournful, shuffling chorinho music. You won’t find this anywhere else in Rio de Janeiro.

Highlights Of Rio De Janeiro In November 2010 Part 2

As a tourist destination, Rio de Janeiro is considered by many to be a top priority due to the fact that it has a lot to offer. Some relevant examples are the exciting nightlife, the wonderful beaches, the people, and the culture and so on. What makes Rio even more incredible is the fact that it is a very active city, basically every single month of the year there are a couple of events that are worth mentioning. November is no exception to this rule as we saw in the first part of the article. With this sequel, we will continue to point out what we consider to be important events that will be organized in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this November 2010.

The Soccerex Global Convetion is a world trade show that will open its doors on November 20th and will last four days. The event will feature round tables, important meetings and active debates. The organizers expect more than four thousand people to attend to this event, coming from more than a hundred countries, for a gathering of 300 exhibitors. This year, the “League Summit” will be held for the first time, which is a meeting of the organizers of the main world championships, like English’s Premier League, Italy’s Serie A, Spain’s Primera Division, German’s Bundesliga, France’s Ligue 1 and of course, the Brazilian Championship.

A highlight of this event will be a tribute to the 40th anniversary of being the world champion three times in a row. For this occasion, soccer legends, Brazilian players, culture and music people will participate in a soccer beach tournament. The Soccerex Festival shall take place in an arena set up right on the golden sands of the famous Copacabana beach, and it shall have a team of former players such as Holand’s Rud Gullit, England’s Bryan Robson, Argentine’s Adi
1000
les and Brazil’s Carlos Alberto Torres and Bebeto. The Conference shall be held during three days at the Copacabana Fort, and there shall be a products and services tradeshow and meetings between the world’s soccer main agents.

Also on November 20th is the Zumbi dos Palmares – Black Consciousness Day which will celebrate the anniversary of the death of the leader who set the interior of Brazil in motion in the 17th century by forming the Quilombo of Palmares, as a resistance against slavery. The venue for this event will be Praça Onze – Av. Presidente Vargas – Downtown. This will coincide with the National Black Pride Day which will honor the man who dedicated his entire life to fighting for freedom of his race. This date is celebrated with ceremonies at the Zumbi Monument.

The last major event that will be organized in Rio de Janeiro will be the International Sand Sculpture Competition which will be organized starting with November 21th until December 5th 2010. The venue for this event will be Enseada de Botafogo – Praia de Botafogo – Botafogo.

As you can see, there are a lot of things to do in Rio de Janeiro, besides the areas and activities that made Rio what it is today.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), in a historic step, chose Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) to host the 2016 Summer Games. After enduring several decades of frustration, Brazil under the leadership of Carlos Arthur Nuzman, one of the world’s best Olympian leaders, won the election in September 2009.These Games will make their first-ever appearance in South America.

This is one of the greatest achievements in Brazilian history. In this century, there are also other achievements: In July 2007 the Pan American Games were held in Rio de Janeiro. At the same year, the Christ the Redeemer Statue was named one of the New Seven Wonders on Earth. But there’s another award: The 2014 FIFA World Cup will be held in Brazil.

A Brazilian Icon

Who is Carlos Nuzman? Behind every great success, there’s a great man or lady. Of course, Brazil has a great gentleman. To be more precise: Carlos Arthur Nuzman, one of the world’s best Olympic czars. Thanks to his talent & genius, Brazil –it is by far the largest country in South America– has been elected host city of the XXXI Olympic Summer Games in 2016. For the first time since 1968, the Summer Olympics will be held in a Latin American nation (the Games of the XIX Olympiad were held in Mexico City). He worked very hard for this for a very long time. For his Olympian background, Nuzman, President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, is one of the favorites to be the next Head of the International Olympic Committee.

Under his Olympian chairmanship, the South American country has one of the most successful Olympian projects in the Third World. The Brazilian Olympic Committee embarked on a massive training program to prepare more physical education teachers, coaches and, of course, athletes (from sprinters, sailors, boxers and shooters to softball players, wrestlers, and divers). What is more, Nuzman supervised the construction of swimming pools, stadiums, and other Olympian venues (Joao Havelange Stadium, Nelson Piquet Coliseum, etc). Since then, he also inaugurated a world-class sports centre to improve the quality of the national trophies. In the past, because there were not world-class sports facilities in the South American nation, the Olympic team, including Djan Madruga (an exceptional swimmer), Joaquin Cruz (Olympic champ in 1984) and Ricardo Prado (who set a new world record of 4:19.78 for the 400 metres individual medley in the early 80s), as well as Esmeralda de Jesus Freitas Garcia Silami and Gustavo Borges, had to train in the States and Europe.

In the years before the site for the 2016 Summer Olympics were announced, Nuzman had other victories: The 2006 South American Games and 2007 Continental Games were held in Brazil, respectively (that’s why a number of venues were built before he made the bid for the 2016 Olympics). At the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Nuzman made clear its intention to bid for the 31st Olympics. In Rio, the national team won 161 medals (54 gold, 40 silver, 67 bronze) and finished third in the medal count, ahead of Canada, Mexico and Argentina. But there’s more: At the Games of the 29th Olympiad in Beijing, Brazil won more gold medals than Cuba, Switzerland, Argentina, Mexico and India.

The Brazilian Journey of Carlos Nuzman

In the latter half of the 20th century, he, “an Olympic perfectionist”, was chairman of the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation, one of the most powerful sports organizations in Latin American. In the late 70s and early 80s, the national team (female & male) had never won a world championship title (or Olympic tournament). On October 15, 1982, the USSR (present-day Russia) destroyed Brazil 3-0 in the finals at the FIVB Men’s World Tournament in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The result was catastrophic: 15-3, 15-4, and 15-5. Despite those setbacks, he maintained his focus on his goal: world titles.

Over the next years, Nuzman, as Brazil’s top volleyball leader, backep up a host of national teams, clubs, coaches, and players. Contrary to most Olympic leaders, he did not accept that a Brazilian volleyball player can play in Europe and Asia. But Nuzman’s reward for his perseverance came in 1987. Without a doubt, he made the world headlines when the Brazilian women’s volleyball team won the 1987 FIVB Junior World Cup in Seoul, whose victory put an end to Korea’s attempt to become the first squad to win three world championships. All his life, he dreamed about winning it. For more than ten years, Nuzman, a former volleyball player, worked daily for several hours at a stretch. From then onwards, there were a host of international awards, including an Olympic gold medal (1992). During his leadership, Brazil also hosted dozens of international championships.

Brazil is home to a number of well-known individuals: Edson Arantes do Nascimento (the so-called “Pele”/ soccer), Oscar Niemeyer (architect), Gisele Bundchen (a top supermodel), and Carlos Jobim (composer of “The Girl of Ipanema”), but Carlos Nuzman is perhaps the most popular Brazilian in this century because he has put the sports on top of the national agenda in Brazil, an Olympic-obsessed Latin American nation.

Alejandro Guevara Onofre : He is a freelance writer. Alejandro is of Italian, African and Peruvian ancestry. He has published more than seventy-five research paper in English, and more than twenty in Spanish, concerning the world issues, Olympic sports, countries, and tourism. His next essay is called “The Dictator and Alicia Alonso”. He is an expert on foreign affairs. Alejandro is the first author who has published a world-book encyclopedia in Latin America.

He admires Frida Kahlo (Mexican painter), Jose Gamarra (former president of the Bolivian Olympic Committee ,1970- 1982), Hillary Clinton (ex-First Lady of the USA), and Jimmy Carter (former President of the USA). Alejandro said: “The person who I admire the most is Jose Gamarra. He devoted his professional and personal life to sport. Jose played an important role in the promotion of Olympism in Bolivia -it is one of the Third World`s poorest countries- and Latin America. His biography is interesting”. The sportspeople he most admire is Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman. “This African-American sportswoman is my idol… “
